Are E-Cigarettes A Waste Of Time – and Money?

Are E-Cigarettes A Waste Of Time – and Money?Are E-Cigarettes A Waste Of Time?

If you are using e-cigarettes to quit smoking then you could be wasting your time – and money. It is likely that they will not help you quit smoking. Here’s why…

E-cigarette addiction

E-cigarette users usually become addicts of e-cigarettes.

Manufacturers argue that it is the lesser of evils. However there has not been enough research to confirm the long term effects of e-cigarettes. Time will tell whether they are less harmful, and by how much. But…

Wouldn’t it be better if you had no addiction? E-cigarettes still contain poisonous nicotine.

Nicotine

Nicotine is the major toxic part of cigarettes. Just 40-60mg of nicotine is enough to kill an adult, so don’t be kidded into thinking e-cigarettes are not harmful. You wouldn’t want your 9 year old daughter smoking them would you?

Nicotine is also the major addictive part of cigarettes. E-cigarettes contain just as much nicotine. Therefore…E-CIGARETTES ARE JUST AS ADDICTIVE AS NORMAL CIGARETTES.

Why would you switch to them in order to quit smoking? You are just swapping one addiction for another slightly different one. There are also other problems…

Apathy

Are E-Cigarettes A Waste Of Money?

Using e-cigarettes causes apathy, and the e-cigarette companies know it. Users feel like they have quit smoking when in reality they haven’t. This stops many people from trying to quit properly.

E-cigarette companies can continue selling refills for years, as people don’t bother to quit. Retailers don’t care that you don’t quit smoking. In fact it is in their best interests for you to continue using their products for as long as possible.

Do they offer any help or support for you to quit e-cigarettes? No – despite many of them selling e-cigarettes on the basis of them being a tool to help you quit smoking.

Smoke more

Many users of e-cigarettes actually end up smoking more nicotine. E-cigarettes are not yet banned from being smoked in most public places. This gives users more opportunities to smoke.

Many people hang them round their necks and puff away almost constantly. Without realising it you can smoke more than you did with traditional cigarettes. They can be too convenient to smoke.

Quit smoking all together

If you are serious about quitting smoking properly, don’t waste your time and money using e-cigarettes. You need to quit smoking, and you need to quit nicotine. Only then will you be truly free.

Using e-cigarettes is just kidding yourself that the problem has gone away. It hasn’t. You still have a nicotine addiction. And it is still just as difficult to quit smoking e-cigarettes as it is normal cigarettes.

Hypnotherapy

If you need help quitting smoking, then why not try hypnotherapy? Unlike e-cigarette companies, hypnotherapists have no interest in you continuing to smoke. They WANT you to quit smoking forever. It’s good for their reputation, and is likely to encourage you to visit them again for other treatments, such as weight loss or phobias.

Hypnotherapy does not encourage a long drawn out quitting process that many products advocate. Nor does it encourage dependency. Hypnotherapists don’t profit from your continued smoking.

Hypnotherapy aims to quickly reprogram your subconscious mind to reduce cravings for cigarettes. It usually does this in 1-3 sessions. This enables you to stand on your own two feet and fight the smoking addiction yourself. Then you have the best chance of quitting smoking for good.

This doesn’t take into account people who smoke e cigs as an alternative not a quitting tool. I know very few e cig users that are trying to quit although I do know some who smoke zero nicotine liquids just for the smoking factor without the nicotine.

While this is true it really doesn’t make e-cigarettes any better.

People are still wasting money on a product that they are addicted to which offers no benefits over simply not using it.

When posting advice, may I suggest that you get details right. E cigarettes are not addictive and contain non of the dangerous chemicals that are present in the real thing such as tar etc. Nicotine is not the addictive substance it is supposed to be. Further, I agree that Hypnosis is not as successful for this as it is for other addictions, so alternatives are very useful. I use this as an entry to quitting and it works very well besides saving the client money. My grandson saved thousands of dollars by changing even though he has no desire to quit but a strong desire to save money. In other words, desire plays a strong part in quitting as it did when I decided to quit some twenty years ago without anything other than a desire to be smoke free.

Hi Anthony. You say nicotine isn’t addictive – could you point me to some research that shows this – I would like to read more on it.

I know through observation that many people I come in contact with cannot quit e cigarettes. There is definitely some aspect, whether physiological or whatever, that stops them quitting e cigs. I have seen many examples that show they are addictive in some way.

It makes me wonder “Why do people bother to smoke e cigs?” If they are not addicted to nicotine in cigarettes, then the nicotine in e cigarettes will not help wean them off. Is it simply the smoking act? If so then why not make a plastic hollow tube and suck air through that – why does it have to contain nicotine?

E cigarettes offer different levels of nicotine to choose from. Why do this if it’s not addictive? Why not offer a very low amount to everyone? In fact, why have any?

Also you didn’t mention the harm, and potential harm of the nicotine in e cigarettes. Would you let your 9 year old daughter smoke them?

Many people smoke e cigarettes with the belief that they are relatively harmless. No one yet knows the long term effects of vapour and nicotine repeatedly administered to the lungs and body. In 10 years from now the statistical evidence will start to come out. Do you really want to take that chance?

Yes you’re totally right about desire. You must desire to quit for whatever reason – health, money or whatever. If you desire it enough you will do it. I believe that e cigarettes remove the desire to quit in many circumstances. A person saves some money (but still spends plenty), and may have some health benefits (but still damages their body). However they feel they no longer need to quit smoking now that they are smoking e cigarettes. The desire is gone and they sidestep to a slightly different addiction from cigarettes to e cigarettes.

That’s why I firmly believe that the only real answer is to quit smoking ANY tobacco products.

There is an argument for and against. E cigarettes have not been researched properly but not all hypnosis techniques have been scientifically trialled or are have successful outcomes. Motivation is a huge factor including individual differences such as personality, life circumstances etc. I do know a heavy smoker that tried everything and it didn’t work. Their motivation was that they had suffered a major heart attack. He changed to E cigarettes and hasn’t smoked a normal cigarette since. He doesn’t suffer the same level of breathlessness. There have been lots of successes with Hypnotherapy and the power of believe can be amazing but we can’t use a one size fits all approach.

Hi Janet. Yes e cigarettes MAY prove to be the lesser of 2 evils, but wouldn’t he be helping himself even more if he quit them too? Perhaps he would have totally quit if there wasn’t any e cigarettes to fall back on.
