There are many people who want to earn money on the internet. They may become bored with the regular nine to five, or just want a little extra supplemental money. However most seem to get nowhere. Typically they tentatively work for a few months, and then give up as nothing seems to be happening. This is often not down to ability, and not even down to lack of work rate. I believe it is simply down to mindset and focus.

In order to make money online I feel you have to be passionate about your work. You have to love your work. This is because you usually have to work incredibly hard for up to two years before you start seeing any financial rewards. This can be demoralizing for some, causing many people to give up before they have had a real chance of success. Also the quality of your work tends to be higher when you love what you are doing.

My advice is to find something that you are passionate about, and base your business around that. I am passionate about hypnotherapy. I WANT to work! I wake up in the morning and I’m itching to work. I start earlier than planned. I often have to consciously drag myself away from my work. To me it’s not work, its fun. Sad I know, but I often feel compelled to work! For me I don’t really class what I do as ‘work’.  This is good for me as I may not be as perseverant or hard working if my niche was say cardboard boxes. 

Making money from my online endeavors is a nice bonus for me. This mind set has helped me work for a long period for free, allowing me to build up my online businesses, before I finally reap some financial rewards. If I didn’t enjoy what I was doing, or was only doing it for the money, then I probably would have given up a long time ago. I may have stopped after 6 months and concluded that there are no opportunities online. I would never have known had I not persevered.

Instead of being worried by ‘failure’, I was motivated by success. I just wanted to reach out and help as many people as possible. Anyone I helped online was more than zero. I was learning all the time what worked for my online business, and what did not. Nothing is ever a waste.

This rather reminds me of what Thomas Edison said after he had invented the light bulb. He tried literally thousands of different metals before discovering that tungsten was the one. He did not see each test as a failure. Rather he viewed each test as a success as he was eliminating a metal that did not work. He reasoned that everything he did was ultimately moving him closer to his goal. This mind set kept him moving relentlessly forward until he eventually achieved his dream.

A lot of people also have the problem of distractions when working on their online business. They check their emails, have a look on a news site, check their Adsense revenue, go on Facebook, play on an online game, and check their emails again, and so on. Does this sound familiar? They may spend 5 hours at the keyboard, but actually only do an hour or two of work at best. This can seriously hamper your success.  Think about it, you could probably double your output without noticing. This would then double your speed to success.

You can also increase your passion in the area you are working. One tactic I have employed in helping people is to get them to visualize playing a game. Your internet business is a game. The amount of money you make over a calendar month is your score.  You must try and beat your previous score every month. You may even wish to set yourself realistic score targets if you want to. Be playful and creative about it. Just view everything that you are doing associated with your online business as a game. Whether you are seeking links to your site, networking on social sites, article writing, building content, or even increasing your knowledge. View it as part of the game, and every little thing you do will make a small but important contribution to your score. This really does help some people to stay motivated and stay focused.  Maybe I will turn this into an audio session in the future.

Now there is one really cool aspect of this game that is unlike nearly every game (with perhaps the exception of online poker!). It’s that if you do well in this game, then you can actually earn some real tangible money, rather than fake online ‘game money’. That’s right, not only do you have the pleasure and privilege of playing this game for free (or cheap), you may one day actually get paid for it – perhaps even very well paid. 

You can spend loads of time on games or other distractions on the internet, but time spent on these does not lead to your personal success. Almost all online businesses fail due to not enough input being put in for not enough time. Simply put, most people give up before they have given themselves a realistic chance of success.

Why not play your own game of internet business instead? Spend the time you would have spent on internet distractions on building your empire. Enjoy the experience, and enjoy learning from it. Whatever happens, you are likely to earn far more than checking and rechecking your emails will ever earn!  If nothing, you will learn a lot from it.  A college course often costs both time and money. Learning ‘on the job’ with your own internet business costs you time, but you have a real chance of making money, rather than spending it on college fees. In the future perhaps you can give up your job, or at least reduce your working hours, and recoup this time. Whatever happens you are a winner, but if you play the game hard, you might well end up a big winner one day. It’s all there for the taking. Just keep working and keep believing and you have a massive advantage over most people.
