Automatic writing is writing purely from the unconscious part of your mind. It requires no conscious though, indeed conscious thought only stifles it. A load of rubbish can come out, or a little nugget of genius, that’s all part of the fun. You must write in a totally non judgmental, non critical way, in order to purely release the power of your unconscious mind. Don’t thin about the end result, no one needs to see it but you, just write and flow.

Sit at a table with pen and a piece of paper. Close your eyes and take 3 slow deep breaths. Now imagine a funny situation in the past. You may have been fooling around, acting daft. Any situation that is funny from the past. Try to visualise the scene as clearly as you can. Notice how funny this feels, even now!

Now start writing, just let it flow. Don’t even look at what you are writing, just write. Write as fast as you can. It may even help you to pull funny faces as you write. It sounds daft, and it is, but it will help you no end! If for any reason the flow stops, leave a space, take a slow deep breath, and immediately start writing again. Don’t think about it, just let it happen. Have fun with this. It can be amazing what you later read!

When you have finished, leave it for at least 10 minutes before you look at it. Go and drink a cup of tea or something. By the time you return to it, you should be dying to see what you have written!

You may find complete gibberish, but usually underneath all of that is a little nugget of genius, something to work with. I have often written short funny poems like this. They may require a little ‘tidy up’, but the foundation is there. If nothing else, this technique helps give a starting point to writing – and starting can be the hardest thing!

This technique is based on self hypnosis and meditation. It works because you turn down the conscious part of the mind, allowing the more powerful unconscious part to surface. This is the part of the brain where your genius lies. The creative part with all the knowledge and ideas. We all have it, but most of us rarely tap into it.

The more you do exercises like this, the better you will get. Ultimately you may be able to write whole pieces like this, and just give them a ‘tidy up’ at a later date. Most of us can very quickly use this technique to give us a platform, a start, a foundation upon which to build a creative piece from. However far you wish to take it is up to you. This is a really useful technique and helps prevent ‘writer's block’ as you can use it whenever you are experiencing difficulty.
